Who is this Fat Girl?

Well, as the owner of fatgirltravels.com, it should come as no surprise that I am a fat girl who loves to travel! I love it so much, in fact, that five years ago I quit my job, sold my car (at a massive loss. Bitter? Moi??), broke my lease and took off for parts unknown.

BUT, the story starts much earlier.

I was born in Norway, way waaaaaay up north. On an island inside the arctic circle! I spent my childhood and youth shoveling snow all the damned time! Not that it’s not beautiful up there, in the summer we had the midnight sun, in the winter we had the northern lights. These were just normal things, it wasn’t until I was older and started traveling that I learned that there was anything unusual about either.

But it’s SO FRIKKIN’ COLD!!!

Not all the time, of course, you often have beautiful summers in that part of Norway.

It usually falls on a Thursday.

So, short, but beautiful. The rest of the year is FREEZING! And it’s an island, so you get the wind in from the ocean…brrrrrrrr!

The one good thing is that you’re always wearing several layers of clothes, and having a layer of fat is like a survival strategy! Bikini body? What’s that??

So I developed my love of chocolate and crisps early, but I never grew to love the snow. I moved further south to study, and I took the opportunity to travel a bit. A road-trip in the US was my first big trip, then later I visited Rome, and for a while I traveled to  Portugal to be with my then boyfriend (it lasted less than 6 months. The guy was great but the country was better). Finally, in 2005, I moved to Ireland. It was an impulsive decision, and I had planned to stay for 1-2 years. 7 years later I was still there (Ireland is AWESOME, you guys!), but my feet were getting jittery, I wanted to do some more traveling!

After a brief stop in Norway to let my family know I was still alive, I took off, and I have been traveling ever since.

My main focus has been on Europe (there is so much to see and do here!), mainly because when you travel for a living (I will talk about getting paid to travel in another post) you don’t always have a choice of where to go, and my employers needed me here, but I was able to go further afield once in a while.

I’ve always loved to read and write, and as a traveler I did end up reading a lot of travel blogs. And I noticed something. They were all written by these beautiful women (models?), posing for these beautiful photos – you know the ones, showering under a waterfall in a bikini, running across the beach with a sarong flowing out behind here, staring out over a stunning vista with her hair waving in the breeze… My photos never look like that!

First of all, I wouldn’t be caught dead in a bikini, and as for running across a b…you know what, let’s just stop at running. It ain’t happening! And staring out at a stunning view, sure, I’ve done that, but my hair doesn’t MOVE the way you always see in these photos! Honestly, even a hint of wind, and this is my hair:

So I thought it would be fun to do my own version of a travel blog, by a real woman for other real women (and men, of course. Be ye welcome one and all! For those keeping track, yes, I am also a nerd.) and so I created my online home here at fatgirltravels. In real life, I am back in Ireland at the moment, taking a short break before my next adventure. I wanted to take some time to get my blog and shop off the ground but don’t worry, I have a lot of stories to tell, and I’d love to hear yours. Write in the comments field or send me an email, and send me your own versions of “perfect travel photos” – I’m sure I’m not the only one with crazy untrained hair!  Can’t wait to see what you’ve got!

Happy trails!
